Why Top Business & HR Blogs with a Blog Carnival

Before there was social media, bloggers used blog carnivals as a way to reach new online and blog audiences. They are a great way to engage readers who are interested in the type of content and resources you provide online.  Blog carnivals are a unique kind of blog community. Blogs of all kinds like HR, recruiting, and business fill the internet and they contain articles on many kinds of topics. Blog Carnivals collect together links pointing to blog articles on a particular topic. It’s kind of like a magazine in that Blog Carnivals have editors, contributors, a title, a topic and an audience. Just like your favorite magazine, editions of the carnival are published on a regular basis and each edition consists of links to all the blogs collected for the topic. As any reader knows, the blog world is jam packed and just finding interesting stuff you’re interested in can be hard. But, if there is a carnival for, say HR or recruiting, then following that carnival is a great way to find blogs on that topic. So, how does it work? Typically, a blog carnival will have a host who announces the next carnival’s topic. Other bloggers who have their own blogs contribute a post related to the blog carnival’s topic. Then they publish it on their blog. Sometimes the blog carnival travels providing an opportunity for established blog reader to be exposed to different blogs.  Sometimes the blog carnivals stay in one place.  The challenge is that blog carnivals are hard to find just like carnies and their transient nature.  The carnival moves from place to place not generally calling one blog home, at least for too long.

Each participating blogger sends the host the link to their specific blog carnival post entry. The posts are recent generally published within the last 2 weeks  to a month of the blog carnival’s next publish date, and must be related to the topic of the blog carnival in some way. Blog carnivals are great for new bloggers, experienced, or professional because they help us the following ways:

  • Provide New Readership. They are a great way to engage readers who are interested in the type of content and resources you provide online. You connect with different audiences and pockets of communities that make each and every blog unique.
  • Improved SEO.  Blogs with higher search engine optimization ratings that link back to your blog, also increase your position in search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo.  More quality links to you and you rank higher on the search page.  Your traffic increases and more people read your killer content.
  • Networking Opportunities.  Blogging as I’ve said before is the best business decisions I’ve ever made.  It allows me to connect with a target audience, learn, share my stories, and build relationships with other bloggers.  For example, Heather Huhman always had killer WordPress plugin suggestions and talking with Jennifer Miller helps me staying creatively grounded in the blogging world.
  • Great Blog Content.  Bloggers love to write and love to read maybe even more.  We spend our days searching the Internet for influence, insights, ideas, and inspirations from other blogs.  A good starting point is the Blog Carnival site that lists hundreds of active blog carnivals.

Blogging as a Human Resource & Business Marketing Tool

Blog carnivals are a unique kind of blog community. We’re kindred spirits of the blogging world. Blogs of all kinds fill the internet and they contain articles on many kinds of topics and in 2011 there were more than 70 millions new blogs created on the leading blogging platform WordPress alone. Just like your favorite magazine, editions of the carnival are published on a regular basis and each edition consists of links to all the blogs collected for the topic.  For HR service providers and vendors, they present a low-cost and less aggressive way to reach marketing new potential clients and customers focused on creating value through blogs and information.  Because the blog carnivals are hard to locate outside of regular blogging circles, HR vendors miss out because they aren’t active in the human resources blogging and social media influencer sub-culture.
