This is the 5th attitude needed, more than ever, in today’s workplace.
As we speak, I am in Florida visiting my parents to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Can you imagine staying committed to anything or anyone for 50 years?! They are a couple from the Silent Generation and they have made it to their golden years!
The Silent Generation were the children of parents characterized as The G.I. Generation…and these folks born within this 45year time span were the blood, sweat and tears of building this country. Both are both categorized as The Greatest Generation.
The words that define them are: Humility, loyalty, frugal, responsibility and work ethic…a.k.a. CHARACTER!
Tom Brokaw wrote in his 1998 book The Greatest Generation, “It is, I believe, the greatest generation any society has ever produced.” He argued that these men and women fought not for fame and recognition, but because it was the “right thing to do”. When they came back (from war) they rebuilt America into a superpower.
This is part 5 of an 8 part series where I am literally walking you through the emotional and rational thinking steps it will take to:
“Do the right thing!”…for the sake of the business relationship, the future of our country and a global economy!
So how do we choose to Re-UP, Re-COMMIT, and Re-CONNECT to our company’s mission statement?
Let’s follow the ATTITUDE formula we’ve been learning over the past few weeks:
- Would you like to find more value and acceptance in, “Who your boss IS” instead of focusing on who he isn’t?
- Would you like to find more value and acceptance in, “Who your co-workers ARE” instead of focusing on who they aren’t??
If you answered YES! …Then proceed to the next section to learn how to…
Re-UP, Re-COMMIT, and Re-CONNECT.
- Pick either one of these relationships – Boss or Co-Workers to focus on.
- When you think of the relationship, do you feel a level of frustration or anxiety? (psst! – This is the emotion that is driving your non-useful behavior!)
- Ask yourself, “What am I demanding about the relationship?”
- Ask yourself, “Am I willing to commit to meeting the relationship’s needs?”…“How is what I am about to say or do going to impact the business relationship?”
Let’s explore the 5th attitude.

Risk rejection, allow for criticism, and above all – Face Challenge! It’s the only way to know your spirit, mind and body are alive and kicking!
The market is flooded with reading material and business consultants lined up to sell us the quick fix for our business problems. Intellectually, we all know there are no quick fixes, yet we continue to take the path of least resistance. Crazy, huh?
Let’s go back to the basics that founded this country. Set personal goals and seek to create alignment in your business relationships. Commit! I promise…
If you get back to your company’s mission…the money will follow!
