Sweaty palms, quivering knees, and racing pulse. Being out of work, laid off, or unemployed is hard enough. Job seekers who have lost their jobs or recently been displaced have a hard enough time with job loss and learning how to move forward and be more than what they do (or did).
I had the honor to have Maha Akiki as a guest on my webshow last week. Maha is a recruiter with more than 10 years of experience and has worked as an internal and external recruiter. She is more than uniquely qualified to discuss the topic of job search anxiety due to her background and education in counseling.
She was kind enough to share with our webshow audience ways to overcome job search stress and anxieties.
- Track Your Stress. Use a journal to track and monitor days and times when you feel most stressed. This allows you to determine the possible stresser and possibly reduce or eliminate it.
- Strategically Schedule Your Interview. Maha recommends that once you understand what times you feel less stressed, you should scheduled your interviews during those days and times.
- Give Yourself a Pep Talk. Maha calls this a positive self talk. Prior to the interview focus on your qualifications, your positive qualities and remind yourself why you are special.
- Proper Preparation. Being prepared for the interview is a key factor in having less anxiety and stress. Have answers for some of the most common interview questions and have your elevator pitch ready.
- Breathe. This is extremely important and a great way to instantly reduce your stress level. Increased amounts of oxygen into your brain have an instant calming effect.
- Not all Stress is Bad Stress. Some people are at their best with stress. Adrenaline is not always a bad thing.

Very good concept, I like how you convey the message.
Actually I don’t think a person should concentrate on the stress itself. Job seeker should think about the positive side of the process and prepare for the better future.
This is a helpful blog. I agree that job searching is stressful. Some of the reason may be the uncertainties the future would bring.
