Hidden Talent: The Classes of 2008-2012

They don’t get the same attention as the very newest college grads. Many of the young people who graduated from college between 2008-2012 are still looking to land somewhere befitting of their education. And, yes, they are talented!  They grew up expecting to work hard, go to college and get a good job.

Something not-so-funny happened along the way. The economy melted while these particular Millennials were in school. Job offers were rescinded to many grads in these classes. Internship promises disappeared. Some of them went to work and have been laid off multiple times. Their parents have been laid off too.

These particular college graduates ended up teaching in Thailand, waitressing in Milwaukee, going to Grad School in New York, joining the military, lifeguarding in Florida, and basically taking any kind of job they could find.  Many of them have been doing internships after graduation to get experience and a foot in your door.

How do I know these people? They really are everywhere and so many of them are truly talented. Now they are competing with the 2013 crop.

The next time you are looking to hire a new grad for a position, why not consider one of these grads too? They are resourceful. They have had to create contingency plans and be flexible. They have had to find unique ways to get experience and opportunities.  The grads of 2008-2012 are eager to work for you.

If you can’t hire anyone right now, can you help them? You must know them. Your neighbor’s kid, your niece or nephew, your coworkers kid? Make an introduction. Hire them for a relevant project. Invite them to a networking or industry event. Teach them something or share an idea. They will be very grateful and you will experience the gift of mentorship.

What do you think? Can we give this a try?
