I’ve been giving a lot to ocial media and technology and their place in the role of the workplace.  It’s no longer enough to discuss social media recruiting strategies or blogging for the sake of a blog.  Ninety-one percent of recruiters are using social media and the number companies who have social media policies at their companies is on the rise.  For the record, I’m excited that the change is happening and the SHRM Conference is helping to do that in a big way.  With the SHRM Hive and Blogger’s Lounge, I’m proud of the way that the world’s largest HR professional association is helping to drive the conversation when it comes to corporate social media.  There are different channels and mediums in which to generate these conversations on social media with both your employees either internally or externally, candidates, and even sometimes customers if you operate under a B to C model.

Introducing Workology

So today, I’m officially unveiling a new concept during my Tuesday Concurrent Session at the 2012 SHRM Annual Conference, that will guide my keynote speeches, research, and conversations both on and off this blog over the next two to three years.  The concept is called workology.

Workology is the intersection between social media, technology, mobile, and culture at work.  Workology will work for candidates as well as employees providing a one-stop shop for today’s high-tech workforce.  With links into Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, Workology will create a wow workplace that drives results and delivers engagement for everyone no matter where you are or where you work.  Especially since that too is changing 77% of companies surveyed by the Families and Work Institute are offering flexible work schedules to their general employee populations

Employee social media and other workplace engagement technologies could help save US companies $370 billion this year. Through increased retention and channels to develop relationships, employees can communicate more effectively through social media as well as being engaged contributes to productivity.  And workology will go beyond the generation and workplace stereotyping and teach how passion, person and personality align the workplace with technology on multifaceted levels.

It’s where social media, mobile, and technology are used at your office to create a culture and employment brand that captivate your employees’ driving passion and captures your candidates’ attention.

Interested in learning more about Workology and how it is changing the face of HR, candidate engagement, and employee engagement?  Look for more articles coming soon or better yet check out my SHRM session at 10:45 AM titled “How Social Media Changes HR.”  I’d love to see you there.
