Halloween is one of my most favorite holidays of the year.  But for human resources and recruiting, the Halloween holiday can be filled with challenges like skanky scantily clad employees in costume, sick employees who consumed far too many jello shots and candy corns, and corralling those out of control managers who seem to be eager to fire employees like it’s going out of style.

The Scary HR Carnival of HR

That’s why I thought that Scary HR would be the perfect theme for this week’s Carnival of HR.  So grab your broom, your witches brew, and please sing along with me as we kick off the Scary HR Carnival of HR.

It was very late one Halloween night,
after all the trick-or-treaters were sound asleep.
I thought I heard a knock on my front door,
so I snuggled down deeper into my sheets.

The knock kept knocking, louder and louder.
Finally it knocked me wide awake.
I tumbled downstairs to see what was the matter,
yelled, “What do you want, for goodness sake?” and heard,

Chorus:
“Trick or treat, smell my feet.
Give me something good to eat.
If you don’t, I won’t be sad.
I’ll just make you wish you had!”

Trick

Doug Shaw, known as the Count of Un-Human Resources scares some sense into the industry with his video.  (It’s a must watch!)

A good ghost story can evoke fear in the eyes and minds of many but good storytelling in our profession is even more important.  Paul Smith explains why — BOO!

As Michael Habberman points out, it’s not always crappy managers and bad employees that are to blame in the world of HR.  Sometimes once in a blue moon, HR does a very, very stupid thing.

New leaders who are hired into organizations can be a scary and unwelcome change for employees John Hunter points out.  But sometimes, good leaders can do amazing things.

Something I never thought I’d see was a Cyborgs and Sass blog from Naomi Bloom.  And Naomi likes to keep it interesting and varied adding another blog to the carnival on HR Vendor Consolidation Fairytales.  I so need to pick up a copy for Ryleigh’s bedtime reading.

Treat

Jon Ingram delights us and suggests that we put the Human (vs. the Un-Human like Doug) back in HR.

Sometimes we learn more from leaders on what not to do than what to do.  Dan McCarthy leaves us with just that.

Halloween like most holidays wan’t invented with HR in mind.  Nancy Saperstone gives us some tips, tricks, and best practices for employees and HR to enjoy the holiday drama free.

Jennifer Miller admits that she has never had a bad boss.  No, she really hasn’t.  She isn’t a psycho manager magnet.  That’s me.  *sigh*

Sometimes labeling can be fun especially in the HR line of work where we are often labeled as scarf wearing, Coach purse carryng corporate unhipsters.  Jennifer Payne sterotypes those toxic HR folks.  It’s therapeutic, no?

Smell My Feet

Leaders take note.  We can’t do it all.  Wally Bock shares with us advice on assigning work to our team, employees, and workforce.

Ian Welch pretty must covers it all in his post — the importance of showering and why employees don’t dress up as HR professionals during Halloween.  Ian, you had me at body odor.

Passive resistance kills.  Prasad Kurian tells us why and how to make sure that we don’t fall victim to PR.

And so the Carnival of HR freak show “Scary HR” edition comes to a close.  Please make sure to exit the carnival in an orderly fashion and take all personal items with you.  Until next time on November 6th when the carnival stops at The Rising Sun blog.  Now, where did I put that broom of mine?  I was sure I left it next to the severed heads. . . Happy Halloween.
