HR Practitioner Spotlight: Joan Ginsberg

Why HR? What made you pick this field?

My husband co-owns a meat processing company. I went to work for his company as a manager when Y2K was looming and he and his partner were clueless about computers. My role there ultimately evolved into doing all of the HR and related function, and I found that it was my favorite part of the job. That led to my certification and ultimately my interest in the online HR world.

What inspired you to first start writing your blog?

I started reading blogs after my daughter got me involved in Facebook and Twitter. I loved the smart and insightful things I was reading, and I thought that I perhaps had a little bit of talent to do the same, because I have always enjoyed writing.

What’s your spirit animal and why? See quiz.

I was surprised to see that it is a hummingbird, because it “symbolizes the enjoyment of life and lightness of being. Those who have the hummingbird as a totem are invited to enjoy the sweetness of life, lift up negativity wherever it creeps in and express love more fully in their daily endeavors. This fascinating bird is capable of the most amazing feats despite its small size, such as traveling great distances or being able to fly backwards.”

What’s your favorite social media channel?

Just like you use a different tool for different jobs, there is no “favorite” channel in my book. I like whatever social media outlet seems most appropriate to whatever engagement goal I am trying to achieve. How’s that for a lawerly non-answer?

What’s happening in HR that has you most excited?

Very, very slowly I see HR achieve a certain amount of business legitimacy, so that C-suite level execs are starting to accept the important part HR plays in driving business results.

In one word, what does the future of HR hold?

Metrics. More and more of that legitimacy will come from HR being able to quantify their business results. That will happen with numbers, whether we like it or not.
