Another Year, Another Opportunity

Each year brings a renewed attitude.  On January 1, your book is full of blank pages and you have the opportunity to write whatever you want in your book.  The prior year could have been difficult, or it could have been great.  It could have been good, although there was the opportunity to make it great.  This year, we all have the option, and the choice to make what we want out of it.

The problem with a New Year is that we all have the best intentions.  Most everyone has some goal or resolution, but most people don’t follow through with any of them after the first month or two.   I am an avid sports fan.    Every year I get excited about the beginning of the sports season.  Every year everyone starts out with the same record.  They all start out 0-0.  Perfectly unblemished.  I like to think of the new year as an unblemished year.  Full of opportunity.

I could take this blog in many different directions, but I am going to talk about how a renewed attitude and another year can help HR and an organization.

Organizations all have their “year-end”  at different times in the year.  A majority of companies’ fiscal year ends December 31st.  Whichever date your company year ends, you should think about how and what you are going to do differently in the following year.

Let’s face it, there is always room for improvement.  There are always needs within an organization.  There are always strengths and weaknesses within an organization.  Planning ahead is essential for success for the new year.

As I look at 2015, I see opportunity.  I see one of the greatest economic environments since maybe 1999.  The time to seize the opportunity is NOW.  Organizations have the opportunity to take advantage of this environment.  It could be a banner year for your organization.

Recruiting will be a priority for most organizations.  Companies will grow and expand and the unemployment rate will continue to shrink.  Consumers will be buying, so having the best available product available to sell will be imperative.

HR must have the best people on staff to help you win.   If you have a mediocre team, you will have a mediocre year.  If you have a mediocre product, you will have a mediocre year.  HR needs to think about everyone involved on your team.  We need to think about how we are going to work with each department to bring out the best.

We need to help be strategic advisors to everyone within the company and help elevate the organizations to the next level.   HR is so critical to organizations.

So what is going to be? It’s for another year.  It is another opportunity.  Are you going to look back in 2016 and see that you missed your opportunity?

This could be the year.

Make a difference, plan ahead, and be the reason why your company had a successful 2015.  HR could be the hero of your organization.
