I’ve often said that your career page should be the center of your recruiting and hiring universe. Well, it’s true. Your channels and communities including social like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn; Job Boards & Aggregators; Visual Effects like Instagram, Flickr, Pinterest and YouTube;  as well as traditional recruiting efforts like Print Media and Career Fairs drive candidates to one single place for conversation, information and most importantly candidate conversion, your company career site.

Employment Branding Starts with Your Job Site

While job seekers believe that company career sites provide the best source of job and company information when applying online, only 10% of web visitors actually make the buying act of applying for your job opening. Question is how do you increase your conversion rates while maintaining or improving your overall candidate quality? Most companies will admit that they have plenty of candidates applying for their openings just not the ones qualified to do the job or job seekers that fit into  the culture of said company. It’s like Goldie Locks and the Three Bears. We find lots of job seekers who are okay but that porridge is still too hot or too cold. It needs to be a perfect fit. That candidate needs to be just right.

Corporate & Company Career Site Needs to Be Just Right

Why only do a fraction of companies spend any time and effort on building, designing and updating their company career site? It should be the heart of your employment brand. It must be the heart of your employment brand to speak to that candidate who is just right for your company.

  • Visual pleasing & easy to navigate. Like your customer facing site, your career site needs to take into consideration things like easy navigation and drop down menus depending on how your target audience prefers to use and navigate the website.
  • Incorporates video & eye catching content. Avoid the flash and the boring recruiting videos. Add original, interesting and short clips that are 90 seconds or less.
  • Job openings prominently displayed. Make it easy for your audience to find the jobs that they seek. The less clicks, the more likely job seekers will be spending time on your company career site.
  • Talent community with call to action. Invite them to join your talent community or network. Make it easy, interesting and fun. Capturing the attention of top candidates isn’t easy. Might I suggest offering a free download or resource to entice  them to add their contact information.
  • Snazzy search. Make it easy to find the right job, position or location that’s right for your target audience, the job seeker.
