The Basics

I have been working in the HR and Recruiting industries for quite a while – and I am still enchanted. I love what I do, I love what I used to do, and I can pretty much guarantee that I will love what I do tomorrow.  I care about human resources, I care about humans. I care about my colleagues and peers – past, present, and future. I want there to be a better way to do any part of my job. If I can’t find one, I will create one.

HR

HR – human resources – at its basest level is about people – you and me, the employee and the employer.  We work together and for each other. I have been lucky enough to work for some great employers who care a great deal about the people – the employees – the individuals – the system which powers a company or entity, which keeps the wheels turning, and the top spinning.

The Wynn Experience

I’ve driven to Vegas, many times. I have stayed in Vegas, many times. Not only to attend conferences on a regular basis, but I have family who live there – brothers, sisters, their kids, and my mom. It would be quite an understatement to declare that I have been there just a few times.  And because of my frequent drives across California and Nevada deserts over the last 25 years to venture into Sin City, I have become quite familiar with Vegas business mogul, Steve Wynn. The Wynn Las Vegas and other Wynn properties are quite magnificent and Mr. Wynn employs quite a few people.

“Human Resources isn’t a thing we do.
It’s the thing that runs our business.”
– Steve Wynn

Wynn recognizes what we hope most successful businessmen do – that people make the business successful. Treat them well and they will treat the business well.

An awful lot of time is spent writing and talking about recruiting – getting talent acquisition right. A great deal of money is spent on refining and perfecting the recruiting process, to make sure the right hired are made. It’s time to think and do something about caring for the quality employee, the one we work so hard to secure. This is it. #HRBasics.

People.

One CEO I worked for used to state, “You can teach employees a skill, but you can’t teach character.” That particular CEO turned out to be a dirty, rotten scoundrel – you know who you are Fred Rogers.  Yep, that was his name – nothing like the REAL Mr. Rogers. But, to this day and even though that guy said it, I still believe that you cannot teach character.  And when you have a team who delivers, you care for them. THAT is what the basics of HR are all about. If you fail the team, you fail at HR and the business will not be far behind at Failure Juncture.

The Challenge

Quality employees, the kind you want to keep, hunger for learning. They want personal growth, they want challenge, for challenge and stretching are where growth takes place.
Learning Organizations will benefit long-term from their employee growth investment.

That may be basic, but it sure isn’t normal.
