Talent Management Today

Over the course of the last few weeks, I have been writing a series on Talent Management Today.  I love this topic as it is part of my every day life and work. I have been writing for HR, recruiting, biz ops, and talent management with a twist of life lessons since 2007.  It is a passion of mine that has not diminished, surprisingly, one iota.  For every new idea, release, concoction, and technology that is revealed to a not-so-starving audience, the expansion and distribution of what is really going on in talent management grows.

I have been an employee.  I have been an employer.  I have been a recruiter.  I have been a hiring manager.  I have worked for an executive, retained search firm, third-party, contingency search firm, and created and headed up a corporate recruiting department.  I have worked for a recruiting tech vendor, a global recruitment tech group, and now for a global full HR tech, talent management suite of solutions.  I have loved my work and the exposure I have received to all things HR today.  I have written about the candidate experience, the downfalls of recruiters, what makes a good recruiter, why ethics are still important, and why updated and new tech is important to assist today’s HR and Recruiting Professionals in their work.

Sad State of Affairs

What have I discovered in all of this discovery?  Sadly, that the candidate experience is not getting better and the employee experience is getting worse.  Jobseekers are still feel uninformed.  Applicants and Candidates still feel left out of the process. New Hires experience miserable on-boarding processes.  Employees often feel unappreciated and overworked.  Employers feel misunderstood and disrespected.  Why do these experiences continue on in a day and age so full of open communication?  Because no one NO ONE is really communicating.

Communication is a Lost Art

Art is a display of something beautiful or unifying or mind-blowing or mind-altering or mind-opening, the achievement of an understanding of some kind.  Has communication ever been considered an art?  If not, how can it be lost? Communication is an art that has never been truly found.  The majority of issues and problems that surround job search and employment are because communication is non-existent or inefficient.  Not much has changed over the last several years – even with the enormous amount of  blogs, content share, changed work environments, and newly-identified leadership/influencers in the space.

What’s to Be Done

We can shout from the rooftops about mobile communications.  We can lather, rinse, and repeat the benefits of a social presence.  We can advise against a bad candidate experience.  We can inspire with personal stories of success and lessons learned from failure.  We can describe brilliant leadership and aspire to be influential.  We can write about employment branding that works and company cultures which breed loyalty and employee retention.  We can help jobseekers and applicants understand what they are doing wrong.  We can site the greatest challenges for businesses today…

We can do all of these things over and over again, but if communication doesn’t improve within each organization and within each hiring process, it will be for naught.

Words

It’s simple to say, “Use your words.”  It’s easy to argue that no one listens.  It’s uncomfortable to hear that you need to change.  But if it weren’t a challenge, everyone would be doing it and we would have nothing left to write about.  Change is never easy but most often, necessary.   Seek out the necessary.  Make a difference – if even if only in your own work-a-day world.
Use your words.
Create a system built upon communication. Then listen.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this article, it appears the deeper we go into the 21st century, the more training we are going to need on EQ skills. The companies that include an on boarding training course on communication will most definitely lead the pack.
