Knowing what’s right for you

Everyday we are faced with choices. Choices which may impact our own lives, those of family members or friends, colleagues, employees, employers, team members… Choices seem to be a very important part of every day life.

I was raised in a very religious home. There are days when I am very thankful for this upbringing and the structure it brought to my young and ignorant life. There are other days when I am fueled to change as much as can because of the ignorance which often left me thinking I knew more than I did.

But…

I can consistently learn… I can consistently grow, develop, change… Because I can. It is never too late to learn more, to be more… it is never too late to be what you were meant to be. I have come to a place in my life when I am thankful for the growth plate I discovered at the age of twenty-seven, when I realized that the world is so much bigger than I had originally anticipated or thought.

27

Interesting age.  Those creative geniuses to leave this earth at 27: Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Robert Johnson, and interestingly enough — I will add to this list, “The Elephant Man” — Joseph Merrick… if you are unfamiliar with the story of Merrick – please take the time to learn of this exceptional human being. We often forget how lucky we are in an attempt to complain about our life’s circumstances. Joseph Merrick simply wanted to live and to learn.

My oldest daughter is twenty-seven years old. She is an exceptional human being, herself… Master’s prepared and ready to tackle the world. I wish I had been as prepared as she at 27. I was – but in a different way. At twenty-seven, I moved across country with my husband and two small daughters, aged one and three.  On our own, away from parents… it was an eye-opener. I had just experienced the painful separation and divorce of my parents – who had been married for 35 years – and my foundation was rocked. If they couldn’t make it, how could I? And that is when I discovered my greatness… My greatness was to persevere.

Perseverance

Never give up, never surrender. The greatest gift or trait anyone can hope to attain and hone is to be tenacious. Survival is a mind game, not just a state of physical being. My daughter, 27, was approached yesterday in a dark parking garage by a stranger. He was creepy and her first inclination was to walk the other way – but her good strong heart kept her from turning around and it was almost a very bad scene… Thanks goodness for cell phones and her strong personality which, I’m sure, frightened potential harm away.

Life is a Storm

Life is not like a box of chocolates. Life is like a storm – sometimes the wind blows angrily or the electricity goes out. Sometimes, you just have to go inside and close the door, because there is nothing more you can do.  And sometimes, you ride it out and if fortune shines, a rainbow appears in the distance.

“Truly successful decision-making relies on a balance between deliberate and instinctive thinking.”  – Malcom Gladwell

Make tenacity a choice – fear will hide when you push it aside with a yay or a nay. Choose to be persevere – choose to be tenacious…
